"Lament"

The painting series "Lament" is a reinvigoration of Canadian landscape painting in the face of 21st century climate change and environmental destruction. It is a song of sorrow and loss, an existential contemplation on our place within nature and our effect on the world.

Landscape painting is fundamental to Canadian identity. Out of Gareth's desire to paint the beauty he sees in nature came something quite dark, haunted and lonely. A strange melancholy permeates each painting, of human presence felt but never seen. If we value our environment so intensely, are we willing to make the sacrifices necessary to preserve the biosphere? Or will we instead cut the tops off mountains while "waiting for the miracle"? Sometimes the saddest songs are the most inspiring. Gareth's hope is not to sink into guilt and despair at the state of the world, but rather to find beauty in the tragic. As an artist he chooses to believe that making art will have an impact. It will make people feel, think and consider while affirming a sense of hope.

Penance Performance Film

The act of penance is self-inflicted humiliation in the face of intense guilt. In Nov. 2007 Gareth Bate crawled along Toronto's Queen Street West for about 4 blocks on his stomach with a field of grasses on his back. The piece is intended to represent a bizarre act of self-punishment in penance for environmental destruction, like Atlas carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. The public response seemed mixed between considerable curiosity, confusion, indifference and hysterical laughter.
