Hard Twist: 3rd Annual Juried Textile Arts Exhibition at The Gladstone Hotel. Curators: Helena Frei & Chris Mitchell, The Gladstone Hotel Artists: Gareth Bate: I will be exhibiting my Penance Performance video with grass installation. This is a very different context for the piece and the first time shown downtown on Queen. Here it is being viewed in relation to textile art, weaving and gleaning the grass. This whole show is crazy approaches to textile art. Looks like a cool exhibition. Penance is now on YouTube. OPENING: Friday, November 7, 2008 at 6:00pm - 9:00pm Runs: November 8 2008 to January 4 2009 | 12-5PM Daily | 3rd Floor, 4th Floor Gladstone Statement Following on from last year's BIG FIBRE/little fibre exhibition that asked whether size matters in matters textile, Hard Twist explores the manifold and marvelous ways twist operates in the world of fibre. Tightly-wound or softly spun, bent, hung or strung out, the works in the show reference a wild variety of issues: including the musings of Canada's last official hangman, a Queen St. West crawl, sharks, dandelions and motherhood (sans apple pie), sports memorabilia and coral reefs, threaded together by their common dependence on twist for coherence and structural integrity. The first human who twisted a few strands together to make them longer and stronger had no idea of the force she had unleashed upon the world! - 30 -
