Gareth Bate: Instructor and Artist in Residence in Antalya Turkey

July 1 - 31, 2012

Antalya Leadership Academy
For the month July 2012 Gareth Bate will be an Artist in Residence and Instructor in Antalya Turkey on the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. He will be teaching and making art as part of the english language and leadership skills program for students in their late teens and early twenties.

Course Description:

Art and Politics / Creative Leadership

Can an artist be a leader? Around the world artists are demonstrating new ways of relating to the world. They are challenging conventions, critiquing social structures and presenting outspoken political views. China's greatest artist Ai Weiwei was recently arrested and detained for months for being an outspoken critic of the government.

This course focuses on unconventional approaches to leadership by some of the most creative people. We will look at political, social and environmental art by international historic and contemporary artists.

No prior knowledge or ability in art is required. We will engage in dynamic discussions where students acquire a nuanced English vocabulary as we learn to talk about art, politics and social issues.

An important aspect of the course is making our own artwork. We will use drawing, painting and journaling as a means of self-expression. We will also explore installation and performance art.

Important questions include: Can art change the world? What qualities do artists possess? How do they communicate? What makes political art effective or ineffective? What is the difference between art and propaganda? What forms of leadership are there beyond the roles of politician, administrator, businessperson, or activist?

Some featured artists include:

Historical: Delacroix, Eduard Manet (France), Impressionism (France), Picasso and Cubism (Spain/France), Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, Frida Kahlo (Mexico), Dada (Zurich/Berlin/New York), Abstract Expressionism (USA), Feminist Art and Land Art.

Contemporary: Ai Weiwei (China), Marina Abromovich (Serbia/USA), Shirin Neshat (Iran/USA), General Idea (Canada), JR (France), Doris Salcedo (Columbia), Yinka Shonibare (Nigeria/UK), Do-Ho Suh (Korea), Kara Walker (USA), Banksy (UK), Bryan Jungen (Canada), William Kentridge (South Africa), Mona Hatoum (Lebanon/Palestine), AES+F (Russia), Zhuang Huan (China), Kennardphillips (UK), Anne Hamilton (USA), Christo & Jeanne-Claude (USA).
