ROM Deconstruction, 2006
Gareth Bate

This piece was created in response to the new Michael Lee-Chin Crystal renovation at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. It was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. I was fascinated by the incredible mess of steal raising from Bloor Street. This piece was constructed out of cardboard, wall paper, birch bark, canvas, white board and acrylic paint. Later at the construction site the structure was completely concealed with panelling. Sadly the construction era was the only time that anyone will ever see the ROM's internal structure. Many people loved this structure and were disappointed when it was covered up. It was a beautiful moment, now lost.
